What is IFO380?

Intermediate Fuel Oil 380 (IFO380) is a heavy residual fuel oil with a maximum viscosity of 380 centistokes at 50°C. It is the most widely used bunker fuel globally by volume, primarily powering large ocean-going vessels with slow-speed two-stroke engines.

IFO380 is a blend of residual fuel oil and lighter distillate components. With sulphur content typically between 1.0% and 3.5%, it can only be used outside Emission Control Areas (ECAs) or on vessels equipped with exhaust gas cleaning systems (scrubbers). Since the IMO 2020 sulphur cap, vessels without scrubbers have largely switched to VLSFO, but IFO380 remains the most economical option for scrubber-fitted ships.

The price differential between IFO380 and VLSFO — known as the Hi-5 spread — is a key economic factor for shipowners evaluating scrubber investment returns. A wider spread favours scrubber-equipped vessels burning cheaper IFO380.

IFO380 Key Properties

⚗️

Viscosity

Maximum 380 cSt at 50°C. Requires heating to 130-150°C for injection. Pre-heating and purification systems essential.

🔬

Sulphur Content

Typically 1.0–3.5% mass/mass. Requires scrubber for IMO 2020 compliance outside ECAs, or restricted to scrubber-fitted vessels.

💰

Cost Advantage

Typically $50–150/MT cheaper than VLSFO. The Hi-5 spread drives the economic case for scrubber investment on larger vessels.
